New Legislation to Ban Single-Use Plastic Bottles in Illinois Hotels

The Small Single-Use Plastic Bottle Act aims to promote sustainability and deliver significant environmental benefits.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Beginning in July of this year, hotels will not be allowed to serve their patrons personal care goods in small, single-use plastic bottles according to Illinois' Small Single-Use Plastic Bottle Act. The action is a component of initiatives to lessen the amount of plastic waste produced by the hospitality industry. In October 2023, the historic law was introduced.

Experts Warn Against Reusing Single-Use Plastics

Hotels with 50 rooms or more will be subject to the law as of July 1, 2025. Businesses with fewer than 50 rooms will have until January 2026 to abide by the law in the interim. The law specifically targets visitors using the hotel's shared public restrooms as well as those staying in sleeping quarters. To ensure that hotels follow the rules, the Act suggests civil penalties for non-compliance that would take effect on January 1, 2025.

The Small Single-Use Plastic Bottle Act seeks to improve the environment and encourage sustainability.

The goal of the action is to remind companies of their obligation to play a significant part in environmental protection. It might also encourage other jurisdictions to do the same, opening the door to a more sustainable future for the hotel sector.
