City of Kalamazoo, MI Hosts EPS Foam, Electronic Recycling Event

In 2023, volunteers at these events gathered over 10,000 pounds of styrofoam, which equates to roughly 5 tons.

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): The city of Kalamazoo took steps to protect the environment with an EPS foam, electronic and oral product collection Saturday. EPS foam, short for Expanded Polystyrene foam, comes in packaging for cushioning, electronic device packaging, food containers, and more.

The event also collected old electronics and oral hygiene products, which the organizer said doesn’t often get put in proper disposal avenues. “The items that we’re recycling here today commonly don’t go into the recycling cart. The other items like your electronics, [and] the EPS foam doesn’t go into the cart, doesn’t go to the facility that the materials get sorted at, it needs a separate path,” said Chris Broadbent, solid waste coordinator for the city of Kalamazoo.

EPS foam can be forever recycled, according to organizers. In 2023, volunteers at these events gathered over 10,000 pounds of styrofoam, which equates to roughly 5 tons.
