DS Smith Announced Top Tips to Boost Festive Recycling

Not all wrapping tape needs to be removed from cardboard before recycling.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading European packaging company DS Smith offered helpful advice on how to cut down on holiday waste.

An estimated 300,000 tonnes of card packaging waste are anticipated to be consumed by British consumers throughout the holiday season. It is estimated that more than 25% of this packaging will not be recycled.

Not all wrapping paper is recyclable, DS Smith reminded. Those that have plastic coatings, glitter, or other elements attached could contaminate the recycling process. The same is true of Christmas cards. Before recycling cardboard, not all of the wrapping tape needs to be taken off.

Additionally, Christmas crackers made of cardboard can usually be recycled; however, make sure they don't have any plastic or glitter linings. Make an effort to select crackers free of plastic coatings and glitter. Instead of using actual trees, DS Smith suggests using substitutes like cardboard trees constructed from recycled materials.

At designated locations, fairy lights that run on batteries should be recycled. Additionally, spent batteries must to be disposed of at designated locations. Food and drink packaging, as well as gift boxes and bags, need to be recycled and kept with care. Since many advent calendars combine cardboard, plastic, and foil, recycling them might be difficult.

For comprehensive recycling instructions, the business advised clients to consult the local authorities.
