Lautoka Launches New Recycling Hub to Combat Ocean Plastic Pollution
This expansion follows the program’s successful implementation at four key locations in Suva.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The people of Lautoka today celebrated the opening of a new recycling hub, a significant milestone in the effort to combat ocean plastic pollution.
Speaking at the event, USAID Pacific Islands Mission Environment Office Director Evan Meyer says this initiative brings the community together to create a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
She says the global challenge of ocean plastic pollution disrupts ecosystems, harms economies and threatens human health.
Meyer says through this program, they are addressing one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the time.
Pacific Recycling Foundation has done this in collaboration with the USAID’s Clean Cities, Blue Ocean Program and Lautoka City Council.
This expansion follows the program’s successful implementation at four key locations in Suva.
The project is a tailor-made initiative designed to divert recyclables from the Vunato Dumpsite, offering businesses and consumers at Tappoo City and the public at large who visit the complex, a sustainable waste management solution.
PRF says a cornerstone of this initiative is the creation of green job opportunities for the Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) in Lautoka.
For the first time, some CPR will transition from collecting recyclables at dumpsites and public places to employment within a structured program.
Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Environment, Doctor Sivendra Michael says this initiative will not only enhance waste management systems but will also create long-term benefits for the people of Lautoka.
Michael says the program, which is part of the global push to tackle plastic waste, encourages the people of Lautoka to take responsibility for their environment by actively participating in recycling efforts.
He adds that the I-Recycle Hub will provide a space where people can drop off plastic waste for recycling, helping to reduce the amount of plastic waste entering the oceans.
