Vedanta Aluminum Partners with GAIL for Cleaner Energy
The partnership will support Vedanta’s upcoming 430 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA) cast house, where molten metal is cast into aluminium products.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Vedanta Aluminium has partnered with GAIL Gas Limited to supply natural gas to its Jharsuguda smelter. By the end of 2025, the switch to natural gas should be operational, greatly lowering emissions by an estimated 47,292 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) per year. As part of its twin goal to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050, Vedanta is growing its use of renewable energy sources and establishing carbon sinks through massive afforestation projects.
The partnership will support Vedanta’s upcoming 430 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA) cast house, where molten metal is cast into aluminium products. As per the MoU, GAIL Gas Limited will provide around 32,000 Standard Cum (SCM) per day of natural gas through a separate 7.5 KM dedicated pipeline. It will be launched with a five-year contractual period on the pipeline.
The switch to natural gas at the world’s largest aluminium plant, Jharsuguda operations, is a significant step toward bringing operations into line with India’s clean energy vision and ESG objectives, according to Priya Agarwal Hebbar, non-executive director at Vedanta and chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Limited.
All of Vedanta Aluminum’s products, including billets, primary foundry alloys (PFA), wire rods, and all kinds of ingots, exhibit exceptional sustainability standards, according to Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) International. The company’s several more certifications from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) further demonstrate its commitment to high quality standards.
