Ellen MacArthur Report Indicates Year-over-Year Dip in Virgin and Overall Plastic Use

The report called for a more collective action by signatories.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Comparing 2023 to 2024, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Global Commitment 2024 Report shows a decline in the use of virgin and general plastic. The use, however, was significantly higher than the baseline for 2018. Even while many of the signatory corporations are still not on schedule to meet their 2025 targets, they performed better than other companies in addressing plastic waste.

In 2023, the business signatories prevented the manufacturing of 3.2 million tonnes of virgin plastic. Their combined use of recycled plastics increased by about 2 million tonnes annually. Furthermore, the overall increase in the use of plastic packaging was kept below the average for the market. According to the report, the signatories raised their use of PCR material for the sixth year in a row.

Since 2018, the business signatories have avoided 9.6 million tonnes of virgin plastic and 3.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, creating a significant collective material and climatic effect. Government signatories have made notable strides in the meantime by enacting mandatory targets to boost the demand for recycled plastics and by outlawing problematic plastic products.

The report urged signatories to take more coordinated action.
