SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): A steady stream of vehicles could be seen dropping off items at the new Environmental Center at Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management on Nov. 18. When asked how he felt about the new center’s opening, Nathan Reinbold, the Environmental Programs manager for Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management, said, “Very excited. We’ve been very busy considering we are in a new location.”
He said that PDSWM has been in the same place since 1992 so it may take a little while to educate the public that instead of going to the old location. People will also have to get used to staying in their vehicles when dropping items off. Reinbold said before, people would get out of their vehicles to drop off their items. Now, all they have to do is drive up to the door, wait for it to open and then when it does, there will be PDSWM people waiting for them to take the stuff out of their vehicles. “It works pretty slick,” said Reinbold.
For commercial traffic, there is a different entrance, which is at 2004 Nokomis Street. This is where the garbage haulers will enter and exit. Reinbold said they wanted to separate the residential traffic for safety reasons. The new site for Pope/Douglas Solid Waste Management has been a long-time coming, said Reinbold, noting that the project began in 2018 when a consulting firm was hired to assess where the business was and where it was heading based on the population.
