worldsteel Report Highlights Sustainability Performance of the Steel Industry

In 2023, the industry's lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) was 0.76 injuries per million hours worked.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The 'Sustainability indicators 2024 report,' released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), focuses on the sustainability performance of the global steel sector. The paper gives a thorough overview of the current state of several sustainability projects.

When compared to the previous year, the carbon dioxide emissions intensity of the global steel sector in 2023 stayed constant at 1.92 tons of carbon dioxide per tonne of crude steel cast. The energy intensity per tonne of crude steel cast increased slightly from 21.01 to 21.27 GJ. According to the Worldsteel survey, the material efficiency also improved, rising from 97.59 to 98.15.

In 2023, the industry's lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) was 0.76 injuries per million hours worked, which was better than the 0.85 rate the previous year.

The paper emphasizes the necessity of a number of promising strategies to lower industrial-scale carbon dioxide emissions. The industry must investigate methods to boost its operational energy efficiency and encourage the usage of low-carbon energy.

All work-related illnesses and injuries can and should be averted, according to the research. Keeping the workplace safe and healthy must be the industry's first priority. It should also respond to occurrences, hazards, and opportunities related to health and safety.

In order to achieve sustainable economic development, the report also urges improvements in products and technologies.
