AF&PA: U.S. Containerboard Output Jumped in Q3

The production was virtually unchanged from the previous quarter. With the exception of Recycled Medium, all main grades saw a decrease in operating rates over the course of the previous quarter.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Q3 2024 Containerboard Quarterly report was published by the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). The research claims that the overall amount of containerboard produced in the United States in Q3 increased by 3% compared to the same quarter the previous year. Over the first nine months of this year, production increased by 6% compared to the same period last year.

The production was virtually unchanged from the previous quarter. With the exception of Recycled Medium, all main grades saw a decrease in operating rates over the course of the previous quarter. With an output of almost 1.9 million tons throughout the quarter, the Recycled Medium reported strong results. For the first time since Q2 2022, the operating rate exceeded 90%. Meanwhile, export-oriented containerboard production saw a 15% drop, reaching the year's lowest quarterly quantities.

Comparing the Q3 boxboard production to the same quarter last year, there was a 10% increase. Compared to the same quarter in 2023, the boxboard operational rate increased by 8.1 points to 89%. The domestic output of solid bleached folds in the United States increased by 18% annually.
