TFC Recycling Renews Contract with the City of Virginia Beach, VA for Curbside Recycling Services
As part of the new contract, TFC Recycling will service over 125,000 residences, diverting more than 20,000 tons of recyclables, or about 1,000 truckloads per year, from local landfills.
SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): TFC Recycling, a leader in environmental services and recycling innovation, announces the renewal of its contract with the City of Virginia Beach to continue providing curbside recycling services. Following a competitive bidding process, TFC Recycling was selected as the service provider, continuing a partnership with the City that began in 1996.
As part of the new contract, TFC Recycling will service over 125,000 residences, diverting more than 20,000 tons of recyclables, or about 1,000 truckloads per year, from local landfills. The contract also has the potential to extend for up to 13 years. TFC will invest in new collection vehicles to complement its existing fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks while offering job opportunities to qualified individuals in the community.
“The City conducted a survey, and residents overwhelmingly responded that they use and value the convenience of curbside recycling,” said Michael Benedetto, President of TFC Recycling. “TFC is proud to offer real recycling solutions that truly capture recyclable materials and to have the largest city in Virginia as our partner.”
Virginia Beach continues to set the standard for recycling efforts in the region. As the largest city in Virginia, it leads by example for other municipalities, including neighboring Chesapeake, which discontinued curbside recycling in 2022 without seeking citizen input. The decision left many residents without an essential service, and curbside recycling will now appear as a referendum on Chesapeake’s 2024 ballot. With TFC headquartered in Chesapeake and formerly holding that contract, the company hopes citizens will vote to restore this vital service. TFC also proudly holds curbside recycling contracts with the cities of Norfolk and Suffolk, reinforcing its role as a leading force in recycling throughout the region.
Recyclables collected from Virginia Beach residents will be processed at TFC’s state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), which recently received a $3 million investment for a new Master Control system. Additionally, TFC was recently awarded a $500,000 grant for a new Near Infra-Red (NIR) High-Resolution optical sorting unit that will auto-sort paper from containers, further enhancing its ability to manage and process a diverse range of materials. The NIR unit is widely considered better and more efficient than robotics, that often are challenged to identify and remove recyclable materials from the waste stream. TFC’s MRF also utilizes other cutting-edge technology, including mechanical screens, pneumatic air valves, and various magnets to maximize material recovery and minimize waste sent to landfills.
“Recycling is not just about collecting materials—it’s about making a lasting impact on our environment,” added Benedetto. “Real recycling happens when materials are clean and dry and separate from garbage. We are proud to continue to provide sustainable solutions to reduce, reuse, and recycle for the citizens of Virginia Beach and the greater Hampton Roads region.”
