The City of Las Vegas, NV Solid Waste Department Takes Steps to Get Back on the Right Track
Seeing those struggles, city officials asked Public Works Director Arnold Lopez to step into the role of Solid Waste Director, and the positive changes have been immediate.
SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): A department in the city is getting back on track, making efforts to add new employees and keep its facilities open to better serve the community, and make sure everyone can dump their trash at their convenience. The Solid Waste Department at the City of Las Vegas has been in a state of flux for a while, with struggles at times in the past year to provide more than three days of availability at its facility, and frequent delays on residential pickups.
Seeing those struggles, city officials asked Public Works Director Arnold Lopez to step into the role of Solid Waste Director, and the positive changes have been immediate. “The first thing they asked me to do was to bring solid waste back up to a presentable standard,” Lopez said. His first steps were to make sure the city could keep its solid waste facility open six days per week, and he said in the past three months that he has been in charge, the facility has been open every day they have promised, making the facility more open and available for the residents of Las Vegas.
Another struggle they faced was transferring trash from Las Vegas’ facilities to the Wagon Mound Landfill, where the city has a contract for waste transfer, due to issues with several pieces of equipment within Las Vegas’ fleet. Lopez arranged to have a mechanic work tirelessly to bring the city’s vehicles back up to the necessary standards, and he also worked with outside groups from Albuquerque and Santa Fe to make sure transfers occurred as needed, and that the city has functional vehicles to fill the needs of its people.
