worldsteel Ranking: Topmost Steel Producing Countries in August

The Chinese crude steel output totaled 691.4 Mt during the initial eight months of the current year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) announced the list of the top ten steel-producing countries during August this year.
According to the steel trade body, China remained the world’s largest steel producer, recording a production of 77.9 million tonnes (Mt) in August 2024. This was significantly down by 10.4% from the corresponding month a year before. The Chinese crude steel output totaled 691.4 Mt during the initial eight months of the current year.

In second place was India with a production of 12.3 Mt. The country’s output increased by 2.6% year-on-year. The cumulative production totaled 98.5 Mt during Jan-Aug ’24. The third largest steel-producing country was the U.S. The country’s production was up marginally by 0.7% year-on-year to a total of 7 Mt.

The other countries to feature in the top ten list of producers, along with their output in Mt are as follows: Japan (6.9), Russia (5.8), South Korea (5.5), Turkiye (3.1), Brazil (3.0), Germany (2.9) and Iran (1.4).

The output by Turkiye surged the most, recording a 13.8% jump over the same month a year before. Meanwhile, Russian output witnessed the largest decline over the year, falling by 11.5% from August 2023.

The global crude steel production recorded a notable decline by 6.5% year-on-year to a total of 144.8 Mt, worldsteel data said.
