Hydro, Padnos Launched Commercial Operations at Scrap Sorting Technology Line

It is expected that the HySort system can sort 20,000 metric tons of aluminum scrap annually.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alusort LLC- the joint venture automated aluminum scrap sorting plant in Michigan has commenced commercial operations of its advanced scrap sorting technology line. The sorting hub in Grandville, Michigan is a joint venture project between Holland, Michigan-based metals recycling firm Padnos and Norway-headquartered metals producer Hydro.

Utilizing Hydro's HySort technology, the Alusort plant sorts post-consumer aluminum scrap into fractions that are more difficult and complex. More discarded materials are given new life by the facility's new sorting line, which penetrates deeper into the pile.

In November of last year, the 50/50 joint venture initiative was formed. Afterwards, Hydro spent almost $4 million on state-of-the-art sorting equipment. Workers from Padnos operate the facility, while those from Hydro are in charge of supervising operations and providing technical assistance. It is expected that the HySort system can sort 20,000 metric tons of aluminum scrap annually.

The start of the HySort technology's commercial operations, according to Duncan Pitchford, President of Hydro Aluminium Metals USA, is another exciting step toward the goal of doubling the U.S. market for recovered materials.
