The statement issued by the Association noted that the move is consistent with the long-pending demand by it and its partners to strengthen trade enforcement across the region. The imposition of tariffs will help in creation of a fairer and more level playing field for alumina production in the entire North American region.

Applauding the decision, Charles Johnson, president & CEO of the Aluminum Association, in a statement, said that the decision is another example of sensible, targeted trade policy that will reinforce North America as one of the best places for manufacturing aluminum and products. The production of more aluminum will result in further growth of the regional economy and creation of additional jobs, he added.

As per data, the North American aluminum demand in Q1 this year hit the highest level since 2022, mainly driven by sustainability. The Association foresees 80% growth in global aluminum output by 2050.
