The Modern Steel Act Targets to Revive the Steel Industry

The Act would give priority for new applications for projects in existing and legacy steel, iron, coke and coal communities.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A new legislation, The Modern Steel Act, was introduced by U.S. Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna (CA-17). The new bill aims to revive the steel industry by building new iron and steel plants producing near-zero emissions in deindustrialized towns of the country. The bill aims to bring new generation steel back to America, strengthen domestic production, retain and create well-paying jobs, in addition to increasing global U.S. industrial competitiveness.

The bill, introduced by Khanna, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, also received support from the United Steel Workers, Cleveland-Cliffs steel producer, and a number of industry organizations.

The Act would give priority for new applications for projects in existing and legacy steel, iron, coke and coal communities. In order to employ lower-emission technologies, the Act will facilitate upgrades to existing integrated mills and mini-mills. Furthermore, it will ensure that the facilities uphold strong labor standards and provide necessary training to employees.

Rep. Ro Khanna said that he is extremely proud to introduce a legislation that will not only revitalize the country’s iron and steel industry and strengthen its industrial base, but will also bring communities together. It marks the beginning of building a stronger, more resilient economy, he added.
