Smurfit Kappa Declared Huge Investment in Spanish Paper Mills

The investment at Nervion paper mill will help it to adopt a fully circular production process.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): UK-headquartered paper-based packaging company Smurfit Kappa announced major investment in two Spanish mills, aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the facilities. The inauguration events to mark the investments were attended by Smurfit Kappa Group CEO Tony Smurfit.

According to company press release, it has invested more than €30 million at its Sanguesa nd Nervion paper mills in Spain, demonstrating its commitment to deliver on its previously stated sustainability goals.

Smurfit Kappa unveiled over 12,000 solar panels at its Sanguesa paper mill. These panels, along with biomass and recovery boilers, will generate more than 50% of its annual energy requirements. The photovoltaic system at the plant is set to reduce the mill’s annual carbon dioxide emissions by over 3,000 tonnes. Since 2005, the paper mill has achieved over 51% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

The investment at Nervion paper mill will help it to adopt a fully circular production process. The project aims to remove approximately 75,000 tonnes of waste from landfills and save transportation costs significantly.

Javier Rivas, COO of Smurfit Kappa Paper & Board Europe noted that the recent inauguration of the investments in Sanguesa nd Nervion paper mills represent major milestones for the company’s paper division.
