SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) announced publication of ‘World Steel in Figures-2024’- the comprehensive report on the dynamics of today’s steel industry.

According to the report, global crude steel production has remained more or less stable since 2020. The production, which had totalled 1, 885 million tonnes (Mt) in 2020, edged higher to 1,963 Mt in 2021. The production totalled 1, 890 Mt and 1.892 Mt in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The 2023 production is more than ten times the production of 189 Mt recorded in 1950.

The share of BOF steel in global production was 71.1%, whereas the remaining 28.6% share of global steel production was held by EAF steel. The average BF-BOF carbon dioxide intensity stood at 2.33.

Approximately 219 kilograms of steel was used in new products per person during the previous year. This is modestly lower when matched with the per capita steel consumption of 223.7 kilograms in 2022. The Asian region per capita steel usage, at 291.9 kilogram, was the highest during the year.

The leading importers of steel in 2023 were the EU-27, the U.S. and Germany. The top three exporting countries were China, Japan and South Korea.
