Irving Pulp and Paper Mill Overhaul to Boost Capacity

In addition, it will provide opportunities for hundreds of local contractors.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Irving Pulp & Paper Limited announced that it has submitted a preliminary application plan towards carrying out major upgrades at Saint John pulp and paper mill. The potential $1.1 billion investment is aimed at significantly boosting the plant capacity.

The project, known as NextGen, will enhance green energy generation from the plant, thus making it one of the leaders in environmental performance. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in connection with the planned upgrades at the plant has already been submitted to the New Brunswick Department of Environment.

According to company press release, a new recovery boiler will be constructed as replacement of the existing 1970s-era boiler. This will boost the production by nearly 66%. The project also proposes installation of a new turbine and green energy generator, technological improvements to reduce water consumption and decommissioning of oil-fired boiler.

The four-year construction phase will create over 2,200 person years of employment and will help in generation of more than $172 million in tax revenue for local and provincial governments. In addition, it will provide opportunities for hundreds of local contractors.

The upgrades will ensure that the mill will continue to be at the heart of the province’s forest products supply chain, said Mark Mosher, Vice President, Irving Pulp & Paper.
