AISI Announced April 2024 Steel Import Data
Wire rods reported largest increase in April permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 83%.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published the most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates notable increase in steel import permit applications during the month of April 2024, upon comparison with March final imports.
Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.734 million net tons in April this year. This is marginally down by around 0.5% when matched with 2.748 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with March 2024 final imports of 2.516 million net tons, the April 2024 steel import permit tonnage was up significantly by almost 8.7%, AISI data said.
In April this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 2.101 million net tons, considerably higher by 4.9% from the final imports total of 2.003 million net tons in March 2024.

The products with notable year-to-date increases compared with the corresponding quarterly period in 2023 include sheets and strip all other metallic coated and cold rolled sheets.
In April 2024, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada, followed by Mexico, Brazil, South Korea and Vietnam.
