DS Smith Announced Major Investment at Kemsley Paper Mill

Apart from ensuring maximum use of materials in the recycling process, it will lead to reduced energy and water consumption.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith- the world’s leading sustainable packaging solutions provider announced investment of £48 million in a new fibre preparation line at its Kemsley paper mill.

The investment is part of its organic investment program, which aims to improve mill efficiency at a reduced cost. The new line will supply recycled fibre to PM3. The upgrades all comprise of installation of a state-of-the-art drum pulping and screening system that will deliver enhanced separation of contaminants from fibre.

The proposed investments are expected to result in significant environmental benefits to Kemsley’s operations. Apart from ensuring maximum use of materials in the recycling process, it will lead to reduced energy and water consumption.

The upgrades promises emissions reduction by more than 6,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year and waste reduction by approximately 39,000 per year, said the company press release. Also, the new equipment will reduce the mill’s freshwater consumption by more than 50,000 cubic metres per year.

Niels Flierman, Head of Paper & Recycling at DS Smith noted that the installation of the new line will help the company ensure more efficient making of high performing papers. Furthermore, it will help DS Smith deliver its medium and long-term sustainability goals, he added.
