Algoma Steel Announced Blast Furnace Restart After Repairs

Also, the company will continue to assess supplementing its coke supplies with market purchases so as to balance its requirement.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading Canadian steel producer, Algoma Steel Group Inc. announced that the repair and restart of its blast furnace is complete and that steel production has resumed at the blast furnace effective Sunday, February 11, 2024.

Earlier in January this year, the steelmaker reported that a structure supporting utilities piping had collapsed at its coke-making plant. The incident resulted in contamination of the water-related environmental release. As it was able to contain most of the effluent on-site, low risks were reported to the adjacent waterway.

The company had announced a repair plan with third party engineering support in accordance with its Environmental Compliance Approval. Also, it had commenced limited production at three coke-production units. For safety reasons, the blast furnace operations were temporarily suspended.

According to company press release, it has strengthened its operations, while advancing essential repair work. It remains focused completing necessary utilities corridor repairs safely and efficiently. Also, the company will continue to assess supplementing its coke supplies with market purchases so as to balance its requirement.

Algoma Steel anticipates some impact on its steel shipments. On the contrary, the operations of the plate/strip mill, cold mill and the EAF construction were unaffected.
