AISI Declared SIMA Imports Data for January 2024

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.359 million net tons in January 2024.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates notable decline in steel import permit applications during the opening month of the current year.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.359 million net tons in January 2024. This is significantly lower by around 6.0% when matched with 2.509 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with December 2023 final imports of 2.093 million net tons, the January 2024 steel import permit tonnage was up significantly by almost 12.7%, AISI data said.

In January this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.777 million net tons, considerably higher by 9.5% from the final imports total of 1.622 million net tons in December last year.

Sheet and strip all other metallic coatings reported largest increase in January permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 145%. The import permits for mechanical tubing and hot rolled bars too were up by 58% and 39% respectively. The products with notable year-to-date increases compared with the corresponding eight-month period in 2022 include wire drawn.

In January 2024, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada, followed by Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Japan.
