SWACO: The Sustainable Side of the Super Bowl

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): This Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will go head-to-head in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. While game plans, those in attendance, the commercials and half-time show are sure to generate a lot of comments, the stadium’s sustainability features should get an honorable mention too.
Allegiant Stadium is 1,750,000-square-foot facility which opened in 2020 and is U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold certified – a universally recognized certification for efficiency, sustainability, and cost-saving green efforts.

Allegiant Stadiums Sustainability Practices
There is nothing like delicious game-day food. Allegiant Stadium currently diverts, reuses, and repurposes 20 different material waste streams, one of which is food waste. So hot dogs and hamburger scraps from Sunday’s game will not be going to the landfill; instead, they will be processed into livestock feed and given to the Las Vegas Livestock local farm.
The NFL plays on a natural grass field that is continuously mowed and groomed for appearance and performance. Allegiant Stadium reuses these grass clippings for composting. In addition, the facility has a biomass machine that can reduce materials (like grass clippings) into biochar (plant-based charcoal), which can be used for decontamination practices, wastewater treatment, and more. Also, as Allegiant Stadium is home to the Las Vegas Raiders, the NFL team has been donating their used grass fields to the Las Vegas Livestock so it could be used as bedding!
The Allegiant Stadium uses LED lighting and a light management system, which allows for the light intensity to vary based on the nature of events. In addition, the lights are on schedule to save energy during non-event operational hours. While you watch Usher’s performance at this year’s half-time show, rest assured that the light changes are all energy-efficient!
