DS Smith Kraft Paper Mill Completed 50 Years of Operation

The company had announced a major investment at the mill in April 2023.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith- the global packaging leader announced that its kraft paper mill in Viana do Castelo in Portugal has achieved a historic milestone by completing fifty years of operation.

The construction works at Viana do Castelo mill had commenced in 1971. It was only in early-1974 that the mill started continuous operations. Later in 2000, it was acquired by Europac. The paper mill was owned by DS Smith in 2019, further to its acquisition of Europac group for 1.9 billion euro. Currently, Viana do Castelo is the largest paper recycler in Portugal.

The company had announced a major investment at the mill in April 2023. The investment of 145 million euros is seen as the largest investment in the mill’s entire history. It consists of installation of modern, environment-friendly and sustainable papermaking technologies, thus helping the mill to significantly reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by at least 10,000 tonnes per year. As per latest company update, the first phase of the project has already been completed.

Neils Flierman, Head of Paper & Recycling at DS Smith commented that the company is proud to celebrate the Viana mill’s half century anniversary. The mill has got to play a massive role in its future operations, he added.
