UPM to Begin Negotiations on Temporary Layoffs

The current negotiations are in connection with potential layoffs at all of its UPM pulp mills, sawmills, and graphic paper mills in Finland, as well as the Lappeenranta biorefinery.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): UPM business units- UPM Pulp, UPM Timber, UPM Communication Papers and UPM Biofuels announced commencement of change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs. The negotiations are being held to prepare the company for a possible temporary production adjustment at its Finnish units, in the event of continuation of uncertainty in the operating environment.

The current negotiations are in connection with potential layoffs at all of its UPM pulp mills, sawmills, and graphic paper mills in Finland, as well as the Lappeenranta biorefinery. It covers approximately 780 employees at UPM Pulp Finnish operations, 235 employees at UPM Timber sawmills, 1,100 employees at UPM Communication Papers Finnish mills and 90 employees at the UPM Biofuels Lappeenranta biorefinery.

The possible layoffs is expected to come into effect from 1st January until 30th June, 2024 in UPM Pulp, UPM Timber and UPM Biofuels and from 1st March until 31st August, 2024 in UPM Communication Papers. The final decision regarding the dates will be taken after conclusion of the change negotiations, the company press release said.

The company clarified that the temporary layoffs will be implemented only in stages and that it would not exceed a period of 90 days in total.

Earlier this year, UPM had conducted change negotiations on possible temporary layoffs at UPM Specialty Papers, UPM Plywood, UPM Raflatac, UPM Biocomposites and UPM Raumacell.
