DS Smith Declared Sustainability Investment at Rouen Paper Mill

The project is being supported by local authorities including a €15M subsidy from the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME).

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith- the world’s leading sustainable packaging solutions provider announced significant investment, aimed at boosting its previously announced sustainability efforts. It will boost the company’s efforts to reach the goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 46% in absolute terms by 2030 and become emissions-free by 2050.

The company announced €90m investment at its Normandy paper mill site near Rouen. The project proposes to replace the coal-fired boiler with a new biomass boiler, which in turn will reduce the mill site’s emission by at least 99,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum, said the company press release.

The new 56 MW Valmet high-tech boiler will have capacity to supply at least 80% of the site’s heat requirement. It will be fuelled by nearly 94,000 tonnes of biofuel, 70% of which will come from waste wood such as furniture and demolition waste, while the remaining 30% will be from plant by-products. The biomass boiler, which will be operated by Engie Solutions, will be fully operational by 2025.

The project is being supported by local authorities including a €15M subsidy from the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME).

Niels Flierman, Head of Paper & Recycling at DS Smith commented that the transition away from coal and installation of new biomass boiler will deliver significant carbon dioxide savings.
