SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hydro announced opening of its new aluminum recycling plant in Cassopolis, Michigan. The official opening ceremony was held on 16th November, 2023, nearly 18 months after the groundbreaking ceremony. The state-of-the-art plant, built at an investment of $150 million, will be capable of producing approximately 120,000 metric tonnes of recycled aluminum every year.

The plant is the third greenfield recycling plant by the company in the U.S. Also, it is the first U.S. plant designed to produce Hydro CIRCAL- a brand of recycled aluminum made with a minimum of 75% recycled, post-consumer aluminum scrap and having an industry leading carbon footprint of just 2.3 kilograms carbon dioxide emissions per kilogram aluminum or even lesser than that.

The new plant will give new life to more volumes of post-consumer aluminum scrap. Upon successful completion of qualification trials, the plant schedules to make its initial deliveries to non-automotive customers.

Commenting on the achievement, Eivind Kallevik, Executive Vice President for Hydro Aluminium Metal noted that the company finds this as the perfect time to introduce Hydro CIRCAL in larger volumes than before, especially on account of growing demand for sustainably produced aluminium across market segments, mainly among carmakers.
