Tata Steel to Scrap 800 Jobs in the Netherlands

The company will discuss with the unions, a social plan for the affected employees, it added.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tata Steel Netherlands unit announced Monday that it would cut around 800 jobs at its IJmuiden plant near Amsterdam. The decision is aimed at bringing down costs and increasing profitability. The Dutch plant currently employs around 9,200 people.

In a statement, the company noted that despite all efforts by it to improve market position and reduce costs, still more needs to be done. The reorganization will mainly impact managerial and support staff. The layoffs will hit around 500 full-time workers and around 300 temporary positions. The company will discuss with the unions, a social plan for the affected employees, it added.

The decision also comes in the light of its planned transition to a cleaner company. Tata Steel has made and plans to make further investments to achieve the transition. The company is engaged in negotiations with the Dutch government on funding support towards assisting its green steel transition.

The company’s steelmaking facility contributes around 7% of the Netherlands’ total carbon dioxide emissions. The authorities as well as residents have been accusing the company for being the primary source of pollution in the area.
