Fresh Agreement to Cut Plastic Waste in Cambodia

The MoU was signed at a ceremony held Friday in the country’s Siem Reap province.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Cambodian Ministry of Environment has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) towards promoting a plastics-free country. The MoU was signed at a ceremony held Friday in the country’s Siem Reap province.

The joint venture will promote “Today I do not use plastic bags” campaign, aimed at reducing plastic waste and encouraging sustainable practices.

Commenting on the new partnership, Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment stated that it is highly grateful to FAO and UNDP for their invaluable support in its efforts to combat the global challenge of plastic waste. The partnership aims to mitigate the harmful effects of plastic pollution on the environment, the Minister added.

The Ministry has been coordinating several collective efforts towards ensuring a cleaner and most beautiful environment. The school-level campaign, involving millions of students and stakeholders, had played a key role in raising awareness and encouraging responsible waste management practices.

The FAO authorities noted that the agricultural sector in the country has emerged as the biggest consumer of plastics. The rising plastics consumption by agricultural sector poses significant threat, they noted.
