Metal Company Opens Mesa Micro-Mill
This allows CMC to produce steel using significantly lower energy when compared to other steelmaking processes.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The new “micro mill” will produce half a million tons of rebar and merchant bar quality products a year. Commercial Metal Company (CMC) has opened its new plant in Mesa.
The mill, named Steel Arizona 2, is CMC’s third micro mill and will be the first in the world to produce rebar as well as merchant bar quality (MBQ) products through a continuous production process from melting, casting and rolling activities.
This allows CMC to produce steel using significantly lower energy when compared to other steelmaking processes.
By using recycled scrap as raw material rather than virgin natural resources, CMC claims to reduce the need for mining natural resources and reduce CO2 emissions by 58 percent.
The new micro mill employs roughly 185 people and will achieve an estimated nominal annual capacity of 500,000 tons, including 150,000 tons of merchant product.
