Nucor Steel Breaks Ground on Mason County Sheet Steel Plant

Approximately 2,000 people will be employed during the construction phase.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nucor Steel will break ground on its $3.1 billion sheet steel plant in Mason County, West Virginia. The ceremony is scheduled to be held at the 1700-acre Apple Grove site this Friday 10 AM. The ceremony will be attended by Gov. Jim Justice, U.S. Senators Joe Manchin, Shelley Moore and state Senate President Craig Blair among others.

The company’s entry to West Virginia was confirmed in January last year, after the state offering $300 million in incentives towards setting up the plant.

The proposed plant along the Ohio river will have 3 million tons per year capacity. The plant had received a Section 404 permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is regarded as the final permit to begin construction activities. The permit will allow the company to build a large docking facility near the plant site.

Approximately 2,000 people will be employed during the construction phase. It will take 2-3 years to build the facility. Upon full operations, the plant will provide nearly 800 full-time job opportunities.

Leon Topalian, Chairman, President and CEO, Nucor Corporation noted that the company remain incredibly excited about its West Virginia mill and its advanced capabilities, which in turn will boost its portfolio of cleanest and highest-quality steel products, mainly used for automotive and construction applications.
