U.S. Steel Arkansas Delivered Significant Economic Impact

The Arkansas operations include Big River Steel in Osceola, and Wheeling Machine Products in Pine Bluff.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Arkansas operations of the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) contributed more than $383.2 million to local and state economies during fiscal year FY22. This included $219 million from direct impact and $164.2 million in indirect or induced impact.

This is according to the economic impact report released yesterday. The study, commissioned by the steelmaker, was carried out by the leading consulting firm Parker Phillips.

The Arkansas operations’ economic activity supported or sustained approximately 1.747 jobs, the company press release said. The jobs with industry-leading pay levels have helped families to build wealth and provide them with opportunities to improve their standards of living.

The economic transformation will be further driven by the upcoming commissioning of its new non-grain oriented (“NGO”) electrical steel line for advanced, low carbon, electric steels and the second mini mill steelmaking facility, whose construction is under progress.

David B. Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer, U.S. Steel said that he is thrilled by the transformative effect of U.S. Steel’s operations in northeast Arkansas. Big River Steel 2 will lead to creation of additional 900 jobs, he added.
