Smurfit Kappa Inaugurated State-of-the-Art Industrial Water Treatment Plant

The company had undertaken similar initiatives across its various plants spread across Europe and the Americas.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa announced that it has inaugurated a purification and wastewater treatment plant in Serbia. The state-of-the-art plant, the first of its kind in the country, is located at the company’s Belgrade paper mill.

The treatment plant was set up at an investment of around €5 million. It purifies water to the highest standards before it can be returned to the environment. By partially using this purified water, the plant would be able to reduce water consumption by up to 90%. Furthermore, it reduces electricity usage and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80%, said the company press release.

Commenting on the development, Saverio Mayer, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Europe said that the opening of the new state-of-the-art facility demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable water management. Smurfit Kappa is proud to be the first company to bring the innovative purification and water treatment system to Serbia, Mayer added.

By 2025, all companies operating in Serbia have a deadline for introducing wastewater treatment plants. Smurfit Kappa has become a role model for other companies by doing this two years ahead of schedule.
