HOCCI: Innovative Techniques to Tackle Marine Plastic Litter
It must be noted that the Philippines has one of the highest trash collection rates among Southeast Asian countries.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recently held event to mark the culmination of the Healthy Oceans and Clean Cities Initiative (HOCCI) on September 15th highlighted the innovative initiatives undertaken in the Philippines to tackle marine plastic pollution. The activities were being organized with the support of the Japanese government. The celebration event was attended by Economic Affairs Minister Nihei Daisuke of the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines.
The regional initiative run by UN-Habitat in the Philippines, in collaboration with the government of Japan, has been successful in addressing the rising concerns over marine plastic pollution. It must be noted that the Philippines has one of the highest trash collection rates among Southeast Asian countries.
The project, which has received a funding of #3 million from the Japanese government had run from April 2020 to September 2023. The pilot program, run in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Calapan, Davao, Legazpi, Manila, and Ormoc, has helped cities in bolstering systems for reducing marine plastic litter using state-of-the-art technologies.
The lessons learned from the implementation of HOCCI are expected to deepen partnerships at higher levels in reducing marine litter.
