voestalpine Launched Ambitious Greentec Steel Project
The investment of nearly EUR 450 million at the Donawitz site will secure around 2,800 jobs in Austria during the construction phase.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): voestalpine Group will build one electric arc furnace (EAF) at each of the Linz and Donawitz sites, thus marking the launch of greentec steel- its ambitious and feasible phased plan for green steel production.
The proposed EAF conversion technology will help voestalpine to achieve up to 30% reduction in carbon emissions, thus resulting in annual savings of approximately 4 million tons of carbon dioxide. The ceremonial groundbreaking was held at the Donawitz site. The total investment is projected at around Eur 1.5 billion.

The investment of nearly EUR 450 million at the Donawitz site will secure around 2,800 jobs in Austria during the construction phase.
The construction of the EAF in Donawitz site is projected to start next year, with commissioning scheduled after a period of three years. The construction areas have already been cleared by demolishing existing old facilities. The tender for plant engineering works has already been issued and Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche S.p.A. have already been selected for the engineering, production, and commissioning of the EAFs.
Upon full operations, the EAF will have annual production capacity of around 850,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide-reduced steel. The proposed EAF can be operated without the use of fossil fuels, thus eliminating the need of coal and coke as reducing agent.
