AISI Declared SIMA Imports Data for August

In August this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.802 million net tons, down marginally by 1.7% from the final imports total of 1.832 million net tons in July this year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates notable decline in steel import permit applications during the month of August 2023.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.214 million net tons in August this year. This is modestly lower by approximately 3.2% when matched with 2.286 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with July 2023 final imports of 2.371 million net tons, the August 2023 steel import permit tonnage was down by 6.6%, AISI data said.

In August this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.802 million net tons, down marginally by 1.7% from the final imports total of 1.832 million net tons in July this year.

Sheets and strip all other metallic coatings reported largest increase in August permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 50%. The import permits for standard pipes and wire rods too were up by 39% and 32% respectively. The products with notable year-to-date increases compared with the corresponding eight-month period in 2022 include cut lengths plates, standard rails, oil country goods and line pipes.

In August 2023, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada. The largest offshore suppliers through the initial eight months of the current year were Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
