NMDC Steel Plant Rolled Out First Hot Rolled Coil

The company has been a major supplier of quality iron ore- a key steelmaking raw material for more than six decades.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): NMDC Steel- the newly formed steel division of state-run iron ore miner NMDC Limited announced that its Nagarnar Steel Plant in Chattisgarh has produced first hot rolled (HR), thus making the 3 million tonne per annum (MTPA) plant operational. It must be noted that the plant was built at an expense of approximately INR 24,000 crore.

Commenting on the milestone achievement, Amitava Mukherjee, Acting Chairman and Managing Director, NMDC Ltd. noted that it is an astounding feat for the company, considering its prior lack of experience in steelmaking. With this, the public sector undertaking has joined the coveted league of Indian steelmakers. The plant will produce high grade HR steel for various sectors. At a later stage, it will also produce various special types of steel.

The company has been a major supplier of quality iron ore- a key steelmaking raw material for more than six decades. The rollout of HRC makes it the newest entrant in the domestic steel market. NMDC Steel has achieved a rare feet by commissioning three critical units-blast furnace, steel melting shop and mills, that too in such a short period of time.
