Scrap Metal Council Highlights Judiciary’s Role in Curbing Illegal Trade

The Council urged the judiciary to take strict action against culprits, based on the provisions of the Scrap Metal Act, 2015.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Scrap Metal Council has highlighted the crucial role to be played by the Judiciary in curbing illegal trade of scrap metal from Kenya to neighbouring countries.

Francis Mugo, Chairman, Scrap Metal Council alleged that the judiciary has not been instrumental in punishing those found guilty of illegal trade. The lack of adequate punishment has resulted in thriving illegal scrap metal exports. There have been multiple instances where the accused person was charged in court, but was released on the same day through rare court orders, he noted.

The Council urged the judiciary to take strict action against culprits, based on the provisions of the Scrap Metal Act, 2015. This will act as a deterrent to other offenders who indulge in similar acts.

The Council declared that it will continue to work in collaboration with various government agencies to thwart acts of vandalism by bringing dealers involved in such illegal activities before the law. All cases in courts involving vandalism and illegal activities in connection with scrap metal industry will be closely monitored in order to ensure that culprits get due punishment.

The illegal scrap metal trade has been badly impacting local scrap metal dealers in the country.
