Recycling Inspectors Crack Down in Akron, OH
Ricchiuti said that the marked bin lets waste collectors know not to pick up that bin.
SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Recycling is one of the ways that people can lessen the amount of waste in landfills, but many people are unaware of what they can and can’t recycle. One Akron nonprofit organization, Keep Akron Beautiful, has partnered with the city of Akron on a project that sends inspectors out to recycling bins throughout the city. Jacqui Ricchiuti is the CEO of Keep Akron Beautiful. She explained what she and the other inspectors do on a typical morning.
She said that they check recycling bins in a certain area to see if they have the appropriate items in them. If not, they leave a note on the bin letting the resident know why his or her bin will not be taken that day. “We try to leave them a note, like this is exactly what’s wrong, so they don’t do it again,” she said.
Ricchiuti said that the marked bin lets waste collectors know not to pick up that bin. When there are bins with too many non-recyclable items, the inspectors have ordered that bin to be removed from the residence completely. “We’re all trying to keep the community clean for the next generation, our children, and really the only way to do that and keep recycling in Akron is keep it clean,” she said.
