AISI Announced Proud Winners of 2023 Institute Medal Award
It was given away by Lourenco Goncalves, AISI chairman and chairman during the Institute’s 2023 General Meeting in Washington, D.C.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute presented the coveted 2023 Institute Medal Awards.
The award was presented to Garrett Angus, Jerry Schoen, Chris Jones and Grant Thomas of Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., for their paper: “Si-Cr-Al-Mn Alloys for High Specific Resistivity and Application to Grain Oriented and Non-Grain-Oriented Electrical Steels.” It was given away by Lourenco Goncalves, AISI chairman and chairman during the Institute’s 2023 General Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Goncalves said that that he would like to congratulate this year’s Institute Medal winners and finalists on their remarkable accomplishments. Their innovative solutions will strengthen the steel industry for the future and continue to provide excellent products for its customers, he hoped.
Also, finalist medals were awarded to the paper titled “Early Stages of Liquid-Metal Embrittlement in an Advanced High-Strength Steel” by Anirban Chakraborty of ArcelorMittal; Hassan Ghassemi-Armaki of General Motors R&D Manufacturing Systems Research Laboratory; and, Robert E. Maaß, Yuki Ikeda, Renliang Yuan, and Jian Min Zuo of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Nicolas Legrand of ArcelorMittal and Rajat Bathla of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. too rereceived the finalist award for their paper titled “Turn Up and Turn Down Analysis at Roughing Mill Vertical Scalebreaker.”
