LIBERTY Steel Galati Blast Furnace Down for Maintenance

The maintenance activities will be carried out in such a way that product deliveries to customers are unaffected.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Liberty Steel announced that its steel mill in Romania is down for maintenance. Liberty Galati blast furnace No.5 will undergo a major maintenance and repair programme worth approximately 18.3 million lei ($3.92 million). It comes at a time when European steel demand has been impacted badly by macro-economic issues. The furnace will be offline until January 2023.

The multi-million maintenance and improvement programme at the blast furnace will replace wear plates and two of the reducers on the loader equipment. It also includes unblocking of the exhaust and gas cleaning areas as well as cleaning of the furnace tanks and its upper platforms, said company representatives.

The maintenance activities will be carried out in such a way that product deliveries to customers are unaffected. The customers will be offered products and services as usual. Also, the rolling will continue to operate at full capacity during this period. The programme is expected to deliver significant improvement to its production process.

Incidentally, Liberty Galati is Romania’s largest integrated steelmaker, which employs approximately 7,000 workers and has an annual steel production capacity of nearly 3 million tonnes. Also, BF No.5 had recorded production of around 2.3 million tonnes in 2021.
