AISI Announced New Guidelines for Steel Industry GHG Emissions
The AISI has been involved in months-long deliberation with key American steelmakers on formulating the guidelines.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced publication of recommended calculation guidelines for steel industry greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It aims to help the industry deliver consistent and comprehensive data across the industry on GHG emissions from steel production. The guidelines will focus on product-level as well as corporate-level emission disclosures.

The AISI has been involved in months-long deliberation with key American steelmakers on formulating the guidelines. The recommendations are not meant for consideration as a formal industry standard, AISI noted.
As per guidelines, all calculations should include a comprehensive “cradle-to-gate” scope. The U.S. facilities must use the EPA GHG Reporting Rule methodology for calculating Scope 1 emissions. For trade, procurement, and environmental product declaration purposes, emissions need to be calculated on product level, whereas a company-wide basis of calculation must be used for corporate reporting.
Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO, AISI noted that there exists disparate sources and avenues for calculating and reporting emissions by the country’s steel industry. The guidelines are an important tool to achieve transparency and accuracy on decarbonisation efforts by the industry, he added.
