worldsteel Announced List of Top 10 Steel Producing Countries
The U.S. produced 6.6 Mt of steel, down by 7.5% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 5.7 Mt, down by 6.8% year-on-year.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the month of September this year.
China topped the list, with the country’s output recording notable surge by 17.6% over the previous year. The country’s crude steel output totalled 87.0 Mt during the month. The cumulative output during the first three quarters of the current year totalled 780.8 Mt, down modestly by 3.4% over the corresponding nine-month period in 2021.

India’s estimated output, at 9.9 Mt, recorded a surge by 1.8% over September last year. The country produced 93.3 Mt of steel during Jan-Sep ’22, significantly higher by 6.4% over the previous year. Incidentally, India emerged as one of the three countries to report year-on-year surge in output, the others being China and Iran. The Japanese output dipped sharply by 12.3% during the month to total 7.1 Mt, while its cumulative yearly output until September 2022 was down by 6.0% over Jan-Sep ’21 to total 67.8 Mt.
The U.S. produced 6.6 Mt of steel, down by 7.5% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 5.7 Mt, down by 6.8% year-on-year. The output by other countries in the top ten list in Mt is as follows: South Korea (4.6), Germany (2.8), Turkey (2.7), Brazil (2.7) and Iran (2.7).
Turkey recorded highest decline in steel output during the month, among the top ten steel producing nations, falling significantly by 19.4% year-on-year.
