Nucor Steel Brandenburg Becomes World's First Steel Mill to Pursue LEED v4 Certification

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nucor Corporation announced that its new steel plate mill in Brandenburg, Kentucky has publicly registered to pursue LEED v4 for Building and Design certification. It must be noted that Nucor Steel Brandenburg is the first steel mill in the world to pursue certification under more stringent LEED v4 ratings system.

The facility, under construction, features several specific LEED features such as preservation of a large portion of forested area on the property, lighting reduction strategies, reduced parking footprint, support for green vehicles, and water and energy efficiency measures. It has used sustainable building materials in the construction of the mill. Moreover, Nucor has successfully diverted more than 75% of the construction waste generated in building the steel mill.

Johnny Jacobs, Vice President and General Manager of Nucor Steel Brandenburg noted that the entire team is proud to be the first Nucor mill to undertake LEED v4 certification. In addition to pursuing LEED v4 certification, the company will continue to be the sustainable leader in the steel industry by further reducing our greenhouse gas intensity, he added.

Nucor Steel Brandenburg is expected to have an annual steel plate production capacity of 1.2 million tons and is expected to commence production by the end of the current year.
