Sonoco Released Latest Corporate Sustainability Report
The initiative targets lowest cost URB production, with an estimated 16% reduction electricity consumption and emissions and 1 million gallon reduction in water.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hartsville, S.C.-based Sonoco released its 2021-‘22 Corporate Responsibility Report. The report renewed the company’s ambitious 2030 commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage.
According to the report, the company further increased packaging sustainability and recycling with the $1.35 million acquisition of Ball Metalpack in January this year. The acquisition has expanded Sonoco’s can-making franchise and sustainable product portfolio with the addition of tinplate steel packaging.
The $125 million investment to upgrade Sonoco’s Hartsville Mill complex, which includes conversion of a corrugated medium machine into a state-of-the-art, 180,000 ton-per-year uncoated recycled paper (URB) mill, is nearing completion, the report noted. The initiative targets lowest cost URB production, with an estimated 16% reduction electricity consumption and emissions and 1 million gallon reduction in water.
The company achieved significant progress toward its Diversity and Inclusion goals in the midst of a challenging labor market. The female new hires made up 44% of talent in the U.S., while 34% belonged to a minority group.
The company secured top ranking in Fortune’s World’s Most Admired Companies for the packaging sector, a mention in Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies and a spot in Newsweek’s list of America’s Most Responsible Companies.
