According to research conducted by Green Alliance, the introduction of ‘green power tool’ could play a key role in helping to cut carbon emissions from UK steel production by almost 90% by 2035. The tool targets to bring the benefits of cheap renewable electricity to energy-intensive industries such as steel. Bright Blue too supports introduction of mandatory carbon footprint requirements and urges increased investment in low carbon electric arc furnaces (EAFs).

Jeffrey Kabel, Chief Transformation Officer, LIBERTY Steel commented that the bold policy steps to decarbonise the UK steel sector will deliver a bright future for the UK steel industry. The reports by the thinktank partners aim to develop a resilient steel industry capable of supplying manufacturing, construction and infrastructure businesses across the country.
