Alcoa Declared Partial Shutdown at Warrick Smelter

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alcoa Corporation announced partial curtailment of operations at its Warrick smelter in Indiana. The company has decided to commence the process to curtail one out of the total three operating smelting lines at the facility. It cited operational challenges as the reason behind the decision.

The curtailment of one of the three smelting lines is expected to reduce the annual smelter capacity by approximately 54,000 metric tons per year (mtpy). The one potline has fully curtailed by the end of Friday, July 1, 2022. The three operating potlines have a combined capacity of 161,000 mtpy. Meantime, the Warrick smelter has a total nameplate capacity of 269,000 mtpy across five potlines.

Announcing the decision, John Slaven, Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, Alcoa Corporation said that the team will focus on ensuring that the company brings down the capacity safely, while ensuring that the production at the other two operating lines are protected.

The company is to announce its second quarter 2022 financial results on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 after the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange. A conference call to discuss the financial results will begin at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
