World Ferrous Scrap Trade a Mixed Bag Till April 2022
The top import source during Jan-Apr ’22 was the EU region, with supplies of roughly 4.4 million tons, down sharply by 12.3% year-on-year.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The scrap trade data published by various countries suggests mixed trend until April this year.
According to the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers' Association (TCUD), the imports of scrap by the country totalled around 8.7 million tons of scrap in the first four months of the year. The imports were down marginally by 1.4% year-on-year. The value of imports, at around $4.1 billion, was up significantly by 15% over the previous year. Turkey imported around 2.2 million tons of scrap in the month of April alone.
The top import source during Jan-Apr ’22 was the EU region, with supplies of roughly 4.4 million tons, down sharply by 12.3% year-on-year. The second and third largest suppliers of scrap were the U.S. and CIS countries.
South Korea’s ferrous scrap imports totalled around 521,800 tons in April, owing to slowdown in the country’s economic growth. The largest import source was Japan, whose supplies totalled 364,200 tons. Russia surpassed the U.S. to become the second largest source, with approximately 41,500 tons. In third place was the U.S. with supplies of around 17,800 tons.
Meantime, the Japanese scrap exports amounted to nearly 2.1 million tons in Jan-Apr ’22, significantly down by 24%, compared with the corresponding four-month period a year before. The largest export destinations were South Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan.
