Top Metal Recycler Touts Benefits of EAF Steelmaking Process
The EAF steelmaking process, widely used in the U.S. and Europe, could use up to 100% recycled steel.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): UK-based scrap metal processor EMR Ltd. has highlighted the benefits of electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. EAF steelmaking delivers 72% reduction in carbon emissions, compared with blast furnace methods, it said. Furthermore, it noted that high quality recycled steel from EMR will serve as a vital component for steelmakers in achieving their carbon reduction goals.
According to EMR, bulk of the raw materials used for steel production have traditionally come from mines all over the world, emitting significant quantities of greenhouse gases and causing environmental damage.

The EAF steelmaking process, widely used in the U.S. and Europe, could use up to 100% recycled steel. The increased use of recycled steel will help steelmakers to keep their operational costs low, while reducing their carbon footprints significantly. Unlike blast furnaces, EAFs are more flexible and can use renewable power, which in turn leads to considerable reduction in associated carbon emissions.
Nowadays, steelmakers are seen increasingly investing in development of new grades of low carbon impact green steel, which has a reduced carbon impact due to usage of high proportion of recycled metals. Latest techniques include conversion of iron ore to liquid steel using hydrogen generated from renewable power.
