Leading Crude Steel Producers of the World in March This Year

India’s estimated output, at 10.9 Mt, recorded a surge by 4.4% over March 2021.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has released the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the month of March this year.

China topped the list, despite 6.4% decline in output year-on-year. The country’s crude steel output totalled 88.3 Mt during the month. The cumulative output during the first three months of the current year totalled 243.4 Mt, significantly down by 10.5% over the same period in 2021. China recorded largest year-on-year dip in steel output during the month, among the top ten producing countries.

India’s estimated output, at 10.9 Mt, recorded a surge by 4.4% over March 2021. The country produced 31.9 Mt of steel during Jan-Mar ’22, significantly higher by 5.9% over the previous year.  Incidentally, India was the only country to report year-on-year surge in output. The Japanese output dipped 4.3% during the month to total 8 Mt, while its output was down by 2.9% over Jan-Mar ’21 to total 23.0 Mt until March this year.

The U.S. produced 7.0 Mt, down marginally by 1.7%. Russia is estimated to have produced 6.6 Mt, lower by 1.8% year-on-year. The output by other countries in the top ten list in Mt is as follows: South Korea (5.7), Germany (3.3), Turkey (3.3), Brazil (3.0) and Iran (2.3).

The crude steel production by 64 countries reporting to the Association totalled 161.0 Mt and 456.6 Mt in March 2022 and Jan-Mar ’22 respectively.
